In October, 2004 my friend Dan Katzman and I went to the Colorado Plateau, primarily in the Paria Wilderness and the Escalante area, and stopped at Bryce Canyon on the way home. These pictures are from that trip. Then in June, 2010 I went with Dick Stahlke to Santa Fe via Monument Valley and returned via Sedona. The landscapes from that trip are also in this album
Dan had been making a lot of images like this at South Coyote Buttes, so again I decided to plagiarize.
From Sunset Point at sunrise. Dan previsualized this sort of layering of the light, so I shot it too.
Our guide showed us several of these caves that have old structures in them. The light on this was very difficult but I used HDR to make it usable
I was attracted to this sort of pointed structure and made several versions of it.
There is a small side canyon on the west side of the Wave, and we went to it before we went to the main Wave because the light was perfect, and because the direct entrance was sort of blocked by a puddle
This is an area in South Coyote Buttes about 3 metres on a side, shot just as the sun was setting. The ridges are about 10 cm high!
We hired a guide in Monument Valley and he worked to try to find us unusual shots of cliches.
Shot in Bryce Canyon at sunrise. I had been shooting film for ten days, but this morning switched to my D70.
We went to an abandoned, reconstructed, movie town off of Highway 89. We didn't get the pictures we hoped to there, and all (three) of the picnic tables were in use, so we ate lunch in the truck. I notice this tree and shot it.
From the Schnebly Hill Road in Sedona. We worked hard to get the century plants into the shots there,
This was shot in a small park called the Devil's Playground, near Escalante. Dan assures me that it is really named as above.
There is a small side canyon on the west side of the Wave, and we went to it before we went to the main Wave because the light was perfect, and because the direct entrance was sort of blocked by a puddle
Dan knew about these pools at South Coyote Buttes, so I just followed him and shot what he shot. I used some adjustment layers to improve the sky and the foreground rocks a bit.
Shot in Lower Antelope Canyon. It is a combination of two images; one exposed for the foreground and the other for the view through the hole. The rimlight is real. I made several variations of this scene.
Dick Stahlke wanted to shoot these ripples at Monument Valley at dawn, so we met the guide at 5 AM and went there.
There was a distracting shadow of a bush on the lower left but I got rid of it pretty well with Content Aware Delete
This is the Ruvo Center in Las Vegas, a Frank Gehry building, after a little work in Photoshop to improve the composition a little.
This is a pretty standard shot of The Wave. It takes some effort and patience to get a permit to go to the spot, and a bit of hiking to get there. It is a good place to make a lot of images, which I did....
In the South Coyote Buttes area of Arizona. Made during my trip with Dan Katzman when we were camping nearby.
